Technical Development Path for Foil Gas Bearings
نویسنده
چکیده
Foil gas bearings are in widespread commercial use in air cycle machines, turbocompressors and microturbine generators and are emerging in more challenging applications such as turbochargers, auxiliary power units and propulsion gas turbines. Though not well known, foil bearing technology is well over fifty years old. Recent technological developments indicate that their full potential has yet to be realized. This paper investigates the key technological developments that have characterized foil bearing advances. It is expected that a better understanding of foil gas bearing development path will aid in future development and progress towards more advanced

Foil Bearing Stiffness Estimation with Pseudospectral Scheme
Compliant foil gas lubricated bearings are used for the support of light loads in the order of few kilograms at high speeds, in the order of 50,000 RPM. The stiffness of the foil bearings depends both on the stiffness of the compliant foil and on the lubricating gas film. The stiffness of the bearings plays a crucial role in the stable operation of the supported rotor over a range of speeds. Th...

متن کاملFurther Imbalance Response Measurements of Rotor Supported on Bump-Type Gas Foil Bearings: Operation to 50 krpm
A 2005 TRC report presents imbalance response measurements of a hollow test rotor supported on bump-type gas foil bearings. The top speed of the tests is 25 krpm, the limit of the drive router motor. The 2005 measurements show the gas foil bearings are prone to subsynchronous whirl with amplitudes of motion exacerbated by the imbalance condition of the rotor, i.e. a forced nonlinearity. Present...

Oil-free micro turbomachinery implementing gas foil bearings (GFBs) has improved mechanical efficiency and reliability. Adequate thermal management for operation in high temperature environments is an issue of importance in applications such as in gas turbines and turbochargers. GFBs often need a cooling gas flow, axially fed through one end of the bearings, to transport the heat conducted from...
